Valdosta, the county seat of Lowndes County, incorporated on December 7, 1860. Though many still claim that the city’s name means “vale of beauty”, regional historians have for decades contested this. Instead, the scholars say, Valdosta, which takes its name from Governor George Troup’s country homes Valle d’Aosta, most closely refers to the Emperor Caesar Augustus.
Long before he spent his life as a gambler and a gunfighter, John Henry “Doc” Holliday ran a dental practice in Valdosta. Fighting bouts of tuberculosis, Holliday moved west, and with this move, he gained legendary status.
Valdosta is home to two state-operated schools, Valdosta State University and Valdosta Technical Institute.
