Watermelon Capital of the World
Cordele, the county seat of Crisp County, takes its name from the eldest daughter of Colonel Samuel Hawkins, the president of the Savannah, Americus and Montgomery Railroads.
During the last days of the Confederacy, Georgia’s war governor, Joseph E. Brown, escaped William Tecumsah Sherman’s “March to the Sea” by taking shelter at his farmhouse, which lay in the area that is now Cordele. The farmhouse, called “Dooly County Place” served as the unofficial capital for only a few days.
